Days 30 - 39: Back-breaking, Muscle-building, Injuring-causing Work

So where is all this crap we're ripping out going, you ask? Well, anything that can burn is being burned (that's how we do 'er in the country), and the plaster and flooring is mostly sitting on the kitchen floor which is already in desperate need of some jacking. Well be doing lots with that floor over the next few days. Here are some completed jobs that I forgot to mention and not because they were small jobs:

1 - The foundation was completed (I must have lost track of the days), but not before Caleb made his mark in it! We couldn't have asked for a better crew!

2 - We removed the chimney from Charlotte's future room. It only took up a little bit of the wall, but removing it improved the flow of the room so much. It was choppy with the chimney, and limited our options for furniture placement. With the chimney removed, there is nothing holding back my design plans.

Day 30 - The carrying beam between the old part of the house and the new part of the house was installed. I moved all the furniture from the porch into the shed (future mudroom) to get it out of the way for the electrician.  Finally, I carried the brick from the chimney outside and piled them neatly.

Day 31 - Dad and I spent a Saturday getting soaked in our own sweat removing the 2nd chimney. This was a much trickier job because we had to transport all the bricks from one end of the attic to the other, down the hold, down the stairs, and outside. What a job!

Luckily, I'm a genius and rigged up a pretty sweet brick transporter using Caleb's little wagon.

That same day, we also finished moving furniture and totes out of the porch and pulled nails from the bedroom floors to prep them for sanding. I can't wait until all the fixing up (instead of tearing apart) starts. I think I'll really start to get excited then!

Another VERY dirty job.

Don't worry! Dad wouldn't let me try my other rig for getting the bricks down the stairs. (We also wouldn't want to harm that special wagon!)

The remainder of the bricks piled out side. These are the ones that weren't broken. I was thinking about making border for flower beds with them or something. What do you think?

Ruined my favourite jeans and hoodie doing this job...an excuse to buy a new Roots hoodie :)

Caleb and Charlotte were very cooperative and let Mama get lots of work done.

The after-shot of one of the rooms with the chimney removed.

Day 32 - We spent the entire day cooped up in the truck with both kids running necessary errands. It always hurts to lose a day doing this, but I keep reminding myself, it's better than paying a contractor whatever crazy rate to do all that running around when they could be building your house. That night we borrowed an awesome dump trailer from one of Dad's awesome friends (saved us about $1000) and cleaned up our big mess.

Lately, Charlotte's been preoccupied with sticking her tongue out at everyone. Caleb thinks it's hilarious!

That pleasant feeling when the trailer dumps and a gust of wind blows all the debris and smell up in your face ...GAG!

Day 33 - Cleaned up the rest of the materials to go to the dump.

Day 34 - The boys laid the first floor of the addition and completed one wall.

Dad working through the pain of his knee injury...they seem to run in our family! He popped the knee right out of the socket. He's been icing it and taking lots of pain killers, but he refuses to stop working.

LOVE all the time I get to spend with my little worker man!

After we get home from a long day's work at the little cape cod on the ridge, I make supper, clean up from supper, get both kids to sleep, and work into the wee hours of the night on Caleb's Gruffalo costume. I'm SO tired!

Day 35 - First floor is complete! I didn't get to see it until the end of the day because I was teaching. I had so much fun, but missed my babies desperately (first day leaving them without Nana)! Dad took Caleb to the little cape cod on the ridge and Keith kept Charlotte home. After work, I headed out to take some pictures of the progress.

And, yes! Those are three huge windows on one side and three sets of garden doors on the other. This is going to be one light-filled, breezy living/dining room. I love actually seeing my design come to life!

Ignore that post in the middle of the opening; it's temporary.

Day 36 - I taught again today. Dad worked away at ripping up the flooring in the kitchen and figured out how to jack the floor up more.

Day 37 - Spent the day helping Dad install one of the beam for the basement and ripping up some more hardwood. It sounds crazy to be ripping up hardwood after finding it under the old kitchen floor but it didn't cover the whole floor and it was too damaged by the glue :(

Day 38 - Used this day of rest to work on the costume. Here's my little helper.

Day 39 - We arrived at the house late today because we had a lot of errands to run (shopping for woodstoves). When we got to the house, we continued to work on the beams in the basement and tear up the old hardwood. It's not a fun job being bent over in a cellar for long periods of time, but level floors are worth the back pain as well as every cent put into it! The boys also finished installing the carrying beam that opens the kitchen up to the addition. It's going to be wonderful having such an open concept home!

Days 23 - 29: And the Demo Continues

It's been awhile and that's mostly because things have been crazy busy at the little cape cod on the ridge. We are having so much fun ripping the house apart! I just hope we have some energy left to put things back together again. Here's what we've been up to:

Day 23 - We continued removing all the plaster on the walls and ceilings in the upstairs hall of the old part of the house.

...and we made a big mess!

Day 24 - Rest

Day 25 - Rest

Day 26 - Charlotte had a doctor's appointment and we met with two electricians for quotes.

Day 27 - Dad had a course today, so I spent some quality time with Caleb and Charlotte (walk - library - walk - hot chocolate - bake) and ordered the windows.

Day 28 - Ripped out kitchen ceiling and discovered some fabulous beams, which I plan to leave open now. Did I mention I knocked myself out with one of the 5x5 beams? Reno tip #1: Always make sure a beam is nailed BEFORE you hit it as hard as you can with a pinch bar...while standing on a ladder!

We've had a couple visitors lately...which I fed! If you know me at all, you know I'm not a cat person, but my sensitive side kicked in and I felt sorry for the little buggers. It all started when Caleb left his milkshake out on the table and they helped themselves. Day by day, I developed a soft spot for these two kittens until I finally broke down and bought them a couple of bowls and some real cat food. I'm a little bitter, because the day I showed up with their gifts is the day they decided to move on to some other sucker! I finally planted my Japanese maple to cheer myself up...not that I was disappointed the kittens were gone.

The foundation is almost done! We just need the floor and slab connecting the old with the new.

She's all mine, baby!

It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta' do it!

Day 29 - More library time and Gruffalo hunting with my babes :)

Days 12 - 22: The Highlights

I've decided to put the past ten days together in one blog post of daily highlights for a few reasons. One, I thought it was in my readers' best interests to save them from the short, boring posts I would be publishing just to keep up. Two, having two kids, working on a construction site everyday, and keeping everyone fed and happy means I really don't have time to post daily, let alone catch up on all the posts I'm behind on. Finally, lets face it, while most of us enjoy a good before and afters, the work in between is a big mundane. I'll break the pictures up into two categories and show you the progress we've made on each: addition and original house.

Addition:

Day 12 - Almost done setting up the forms.

 - Caleb got some new work boots and he's super proud to be "just like Grampy."

Day 13 - Caleb with "the boys"

Day 14 - Foundation walls poured!

The addition looks really small from the outside, especially when they only had the footing poured, but it is going to almost double our living space. The dimensions of the addition are 26' x 21' with a full basement. SO excited!

...and so is Caleb (but that might have more to do with the cement mixer)

Day 15 - Errands

Day 16 - Scored three awesome wood doors on Kijiji for $500 and had to take a little road trip to pick them up. We stopped at the house on the way home to check out the progress, so please excuse the horrible quality of the following picture.

Day 17 - Market for some yummy food, no progress made :(

Day 18 - Bowling and Thanksgiving dinner with the Booker clan which just happens to fall on my sister's birthday. Happy Birthday Auntie Sash!

Day 19 - We took the next few days off and didn't make much progress. I expected this to happen because we had been going full-tilt for so long and the projects were in reno-limbo (reno-limbo; state of being: big demolition jobs completed but not ready to start building). I spent day nineteen Gruffalo hunting, at a play-date, and eating more turkey.

Day 20 - The boys smoothed out the foundation walls and filled in that awkward space between the old foundation and the new foundation. I was uneasy about how this would be dealt with, but was really impressed with how they handled it. They're going to pour a slab on top of all that dirt and I gained an extra hundred-forty feet of living space.

Day 21 - Rain...no progress on the foundation

Day 22 - Still raining

So that is where we left things with the foundation. Here's a few highlights from the work going on inside the little cape cod on the ridge.

Day 12 - Dad finished taking down the ceiling in the kitchen and future pantry/laundry room and I ripped the walls off in Caleb's future bedroom. I'm so excited for when we actually start putting things back together. I love all the demo, but designing and decorating is what I live for. The walls will be replaced up to the slanted ceilings with horizontal wood paneling, painted white for that airy/beachy look and the tops will either be painted or have fun wallpaper. I'll give you a sneak-peek for that later. It's one of the reasons I wanted to do this highlight post; so I can start sharing my plans for all the fun stuff. I also took all the trim I had removed from the rooms out to the carport and neatly stacked it...put it in a pile.

Day 13 - Keith came out to the house on his day off and we finished the other two bedrooms in the old part of the little cape cod on the ridge.

Day 14 - We didn't get too much done inside the house, but it was a beautiful day so we just enjoyed it. Dad chopped down another tree that was in the way and we all helped carry the branches to the burn pile. Caleb became king of the mountain, Dad had a nap on the grass, and I took lots of pictures of my babies.

Day 15 - Errands

Day 16 - Here are some poor quality pictures of the awesome quality doors I scored on Kijiji.

Day 17 - Market

Day 18 - Thanksgiving

Day 19 - Gruffalo Hunting

Day 20 - Dad and I finished removing all the plaster upstairs (including in the hall) and cleaned up.

Day 21 - Rain

Day 22 - Still raining
